Black hat 480x480Coaches play a vital & significant role in youth sports. Most of us want our kids to participate in youth sports , and hope they have good coaches who will teach them the game & sportsmanship.

The Greater Cabarrus Athletic Association (GCAA) primary function is to provide a competitive sports venue for homeschool students. It is an environment that promotes a Christian approach to sports and teaches the student athlete the importance of bringing their faith into their athletics. GCAA is based in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, but serves athletes from all areas surrounding, reaching into Mecklenburg and Rowan Counties frequently as well as drawing athletes from many more distant counties in North and South Carolina. GCAA is a safe place for a student to honor God and play his or her sport to their highest ability. Teams are developed for the purpose of developing the character, skill, and teamwork of each student with the hope that a properly placed passion for their sport will serve them and their walk with God for the rest of their lives.

Be a part of a youth athlete's sports experience!

GCAA coaches volunteer their time and talents to provide a positive atmosphere for our atheletes. If you have interest in becoming a coach or assistant please contact us.

A Letter from the GCAA President...

Families and Friends of GCAA,
For many years GCAA has provided a much needed opportunity for the homeschool community to
participate in various athletic programs serving the general Metrolina area, from upstate South Carolina
out to Shelby and beyond Salisbury. As GCAA approaches two decades of service to this thriving
community, the board wants to express their thanks as well as provide a forecast for the next decade of
homeschool athletics. Please take a moment to consider the landscape of our community and how
significant a role athletics plays in the development of our children and how important GCAA is by
providing a platform for homeschool students to participate in competitive athletics.

Much of what GCAA accomplishes rests squarely on the shoulders of parents who are willing to commit
in multiple ways. Without parents the most basic need of transportation isn’t even met. Beyond that, the
financial commitments, time given to the program(s), and sacrifice made by other family members is
significant. We want to say thank you for your contributions to the success and growth of GCAA. Our
success on the field/court is only surpassed by the opportunity to meet and lead your children. We hope
you see the value of GCAA as a program to serve your family.

In addition, parents comprise the GCAA Board, and most Coaches are parents. These parents sacrifice
their time, energy and passions for all the students and the sports they are involved with. GCAA has
relied on some of these parents for well over 10 years now and time is becoming an enemy. As their
students grow older roles change and the commitment to GCAA is harder to make. The GCAA
leadership is seeing that time approach and others need to step in to provide time and energy, to cast
vision, and lead this wonderful organization that God has provided for our children into the next decade.

In two to four years, the roles of President, Athletic Director, Treasurer and some longstanding coaches
will graduate their children, and while there is still passion for GCAA, those parents will need to pass
the mantel to the next group of leaders before that time expires. Last year saw another large group of
graduating families with coaches and players. Consequently, GCAA has now folded two long standing,
very successful programs (baseball & softball). Coaches and players are in short supply in other
programs as well. Over the next few years as this next group of athletes, coaches and leaders start to
graduate, the board sees a potential crisis in the leadership and programs of GCAA.

New parents are needed to become part of the GCAA Board, to coach or to help re-start programs at
elementary or middle school levels, get the word out, be a recruiter of athletes. It takes a community and
effort to field these teams. We want to see a good pipeline of coaches and players for all sports. The
more that become involved, the more fun it is, and the easier it becomes to manage and transition
leadership for many years to come. Please reach out to John Frey at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or Nancy
Cone at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to express your interest in serving the homeschool community this way.

Sincerely,
